Bridging Generations: Encouragement for Nurses’ Week

One of the great privileges of working at Messiah Lifeways is the ability to connect with and learn from people who’ve already walked in our shoes. Stories from a resident’s past are often inspiration for a team member’s future. So, we invited retired nurses who are now Residential Living residents of Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village to share some of their stories and encouragement with our current nurses. Some of these residents even served in the very same Messiah Village Nursing Care neighborhoods that our team members work in today!

This Nurses’ Week, we’ve done our best to show appreciation through public recognition, a celebratory atmosphere around campus, gratitude boards with notes making their way through the neighborhoods, and a visit from the Farm Show Milkshake Truck. But, what better way to make Nurses’ Week more meaningful than to bridge the generations again through this connection?

So, Messiah Lifeways nurses, these letters were written with love for you. Happy Nurses Week!

I sincerely loved all of my different jobs. Every day was a challenge and something different. I know nursing has changed so much, but taking care of sick or injured patients or handicapped people is still the priority of nursing. Being able to help someone through a health crisis is a great feeling. – Carole Fatzinger

I commend you heartily for the very important work that you do day after day (or evening and night after the same.) Much of my career was in nursing education. I always told the students my criteria for them being a good nurse was that I thought they were good enough to care for my parents. Every day you care for someone’s parents. Some of you cared for both of my parents with skill and compassion. Thank you. – Sandra L. Jamison

I am very glad I made the decision I did back in 1951 and would do the same thing again. I enjoy interacting with people. There are many changes occuring in the medical and nursing fields as science and research develop ways to improve our lives in medicine. – Pat Greenawald

As a former Messiah Village 3-11 Charge Nurse, now resident, I learned a lot from residents in my care… It’s the little things that count and I know that those little things you do for the residents make Messiah Village a special place to work and serve and grow in your nursing career.Karen Kapp
