The Benefits of Making an Early Decision

“The earlier the better.” We have all heard this common advice in reference to everything from arriving at an event to preparing for retirement. Researching options for a loved one living with dementia is no exception.

During my time working at Messiah Lifeways® Adult Day, assisting families as they consider enrolling their loved one in an adult day program, I have often heard the opposite statements: “they aren’t ready for this” or “I’m not ready for this.” While I understand and am sympathetic as to why someone may be reluctant to enroll their loved one in Adult Day, the benefits of enrolling earlier rather than later greatly outweigh any downsides.

Start Early

The earlier a person starts attending a social program, like Adult Day, the easier the transition is for both the client and caregiver. It helps establish a routine, which so many studies on dementia have shown is beneficial to those with early to mid-stage dementia. Enrolling earlier reduces the anxiety that change and transitions often bring.

Establish a Routine

One of the unique features of Adult Day is the routine and structure provided on a daily basis. We feature a daily schedule that follows the same type of programming, but with different content to provide variety in our day. Families have often shared that having their loved one attend Adult Day has assisted them in establishing a routine at home, reducing caregiver burden as well.

Reduce Anxiety

We have found that when an individual begins attending Adult Day in the early stage of their dementia journey, they adapt to being in the social environment and are rewarded by the benefits. They also develop friendships with other clients, creating an extended social circle.

On the other hand, when their start is delayed, the individuals are not able to enjoy their time in Adult Day and reap the benefits, because they become more anxious and much of their day is spent being reassured by team members. In turn, the time they can spend in an Adult Day program is often shortened because they can not adjust successfully.
