Kicking Down Wellness Barriers

I have been a personal trainer for nearly half a decade, and during this time, I have come across numerous walks of life—from children as young as five years old to adults 95 and older. Though each individual is unique in their fitness wants and needs, one thing they all have in common is the benefits that their bodies gain from exercising.

I recognize that starting a workout regimen can be daunting for those who are experiencing some level of decreased mobility or physical wellness, those who are combating persistent pain or conditions, or those who, like many, simply just don’t know where to begin. I also know that adults aged 55+ in particular universally carry a stigma that life needs to become more sedentary and slow down as you age. That stigma can be challenging to break down, but it’s not backed by truth, and it’s something I’m committed to combating every day with my clients.

At Messiah Lifeways, one of the many exercise classes that I teach, in addition to physical therapy, is kickboxing. Kickboxing is not just for the red-gloved professionals or for the fittest of the fit who have powerful punches and kicks; it’s also for those with a limited or minimal fitness foundation who are looking to build their strength and mobility.

Our 30- to 45-minute kickboxing-inspired classes are moderate in intensity and are offered both on land and in the water. “Off the Hook’’ is an introductory class that teaches the basic movements of kickboxing—various air punches and kicks. With all standing and no jumping movements that alternate between short periods of activity and brief recovery periods, it is a class suitable for all individuals, even those who may have arthritis, Parkinson’s, or another mobility-limiting disease. Similarly, “Kick The Water,” which is taught by one of our other Wellness specialists, uses kickboxing movements but against the resistance of water. Not only are both fun—a mix of sweat and smiles—but they also provide lasting and life-improving benefits.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF KICKBOXING:

  • Balance / Decreased risk of falls
  • Strength, flexibility, and mobility
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Improved cognitive ability
  • Confidence
  • Heart health
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced stress / Improved mental health

Though kickboxing is a client favorite, it is only one of many fun, innovative, and boundary-defying ways to exercise at Messiah Lifeways.
